| May 5, 2008 We took a Holland of America cruise to Belize, Guatemala and Mexico in April, 2008. They had a one day ship excursion to Tikal from Santo Tomas Guatemala by plane that was very expensive. We are pretty adventurous and decided we could do better. We got permission to disembark from the ship for a night in Belize City so we could travel by car to Tikal, spend the afternoon and morning there, and then return to the ship the next day, by car and river cruise to Santo Tomas. We tried to find a reasonable travel agent who could arrange a driver and car for us in Guatemala, but that didn’t work out, because of the language barrier and the unreasonable insistence that the full price be wire-transferred before the trip. Time was running out so we flooded tour agents in Belize City using email from the Ship while on route! Only a couple of them answered and the first was Experience Belize Tours and that made all of the difference. They were extremely professional and reasonably priced. Our driver, Juan, spoke both English and Spanish, and was kind, patient and helpful. We were traveling with a person that had Down’s Syndrome and Juan took extra special care of him; we will be ever grateful for this. He also helped arrange guides at discounted prices and knew all of the good local places to eat and shop at on the way. Juan was also a very safe driver and the car was in good mechanical condition. On the second day the ship decided to leave Santo Tomas early. They called our emergency contact, who called Experience Belize Tours. Experience Belize Tours went out of their way to track us down in the middle of Guatemala to inform us of the bad news. We had to skip the river cruise down the Rio Dulce and Juan was forced to drive us all of the way to the ship; which he did without complaint. We got there with 40 minutes to spare! We all hope that we can return to Belize and Guatemala in the future and when we do we will surely go with Experience Belize Tours. Agnieska and Eric Wolfe USA Some cruise lines unfortunately give disembarking preference to passengers who book excursions through the ship, which makes outside arrangements more difficult. During a recent Caribbean cruise, I got off the ship in Belize City too late to catch the tour company I wanted for a cave-tubing excursion, but it turned out the cruise line couldn't have done me a bigger favor. After some last-minute bargaining among several agencies at the cruise terminal, I ended up with Allen Dawson, a guide with Experience Belize Tours, who packed me in the van with a Chilean family of five, only one of whom spoke even a little English. Dawson handled the language situation well, providing all information and instruction in both languages and helping me with my mangled Spanish. The tour itself -- riding down a river in inner tubes through pitch- dark limestone caves -- was terrific. Dawson maintained the structure of the trip but still kept it very casual, engaging the group in all sorts of discussions, from family and jobs to Chilean politics and the ability of tequila to improve mangled Spanish. July 2009 Hello Leah and Allan, We made it back from our cruise and wanted to take a moment to tell you how pleased we were with our Altun Ha tour. The weather was rainy but we had a great time. Allan was a great guide and was very accommodating of our group, including the kids. It was obvious that he is very proud of his country and heritage and wanted to share it with us. He kept us entertained the entire trip with different tidbits of history, info, and even some singing! The ruins were awesome and lunch at the restaurant was delicious. Thank you both for your great service and for sharing your beautiful country with us. We’ve only been home for a couple days, but want to come to Belize again and take another tour with you.
